A family Secret Santa everyone can enjoy

Buying for one person instead of the whole family can make holiday shopping more manageable. Set a few clear expectations so the surprise comes from the present, rather than an unexpected cost or a misunderstood rule.

Decide who counts as a participant

Will each adult join individually, or will each household enter once? Either can work, but choose before adding names. Use recognisable names if two relatives have the same first name.

If children are taking part, agree with a responsible adult who handles shopping and spending. Avoid publishing children's ages, addresses or other personal information. This is a gift exchange between participants, not a cash-prize raffle or lottery.

Put the rules in one message

Include the joining deadline, budget, exchange date and delivery arrangements in a single message. Say whether handmade, second-hand or experience gifts are welcome. Shared expectations matter more than identical shopping habits.

Choose a limit everyone can afford. When postage is needed, decide whether it sits inside the gift budget or has its own allowance. Remember that someone posting abroad may face a very different delivery cost from someone bringing a gift to dinner.

Give people enough clues

A few interests can be more helpful than an exact shopping list: favourite book genres, hobbies, coffee or tea preferences, or games they enjoy. Share these voluntarily in your usual family chat. Avoid guessing sizes or buying food without checking allergies.

A short handwritten note adds thought without adding much cost. For an unfamiliar hobby, a useful accessory can be safer than specialised equipment. Check current prices, delivery dates and return conditions in the shop before ordering; a budget category is not a price guarantee.

Keep the result and personal link private

The organiser creates a Snowdraw group and shares the invitation link. Everyone joins from their own device and opens their own card after the draw. A personal card link is different from the group invitation: keep it to yourself.

Snowdraw supports 3 to 100 participants. Nobody draws themselves and no two people draw each other. Specific exclusions for partners or siblings are not currently available. If those exclusions are essential to your family, account for that before choosing how to run the exchange.
